The 12 songs collected here are intended to signify a new brotherkenzie era: one embracing sex and heathen ideals. Even the title vies for blasphemy; Stocker’s attempt to divorce his first name from its loaded religious meaning and instead take ownership of it. Description:

In the years between 2018‚ BAMBI and LP3, Minneapolis‚ Hippo Campus -- made up of vocalist/guitarists Jake Luppen and Nathan Stocker, drummer Whistler Allen, bassist Zach Sutton, and trumpeter DeCarlo Jackson -- has grown up and into itself. Although the five-piece has been friends since middle school and put out a number of studio releases since its inception, it‚ the new record, LP3, that‚the most honest portrait of who Hippo Campus is.

What Hippo Campus wanted with LP3 was something all five of them could agree on, the way they‚ made music in the early days of the band. As their profile grew, they found themselves compromising on their visions, thinking about how fans would interact with their music, and plagued by an unsustainable industry ecosystem. Now, they just wanted unity.

LP3 is, then, their strongest and most complete work yet -- a freshly-inked portrait excavating young adulthood and identity and, more importantly, how that personal identity fits into a larger camaraderie. It looks at how growing up can just feel like something that‚ always moving past you when you‚ trying to grab a hold of it; it‚ a push-and-pull of letting go or holding tighter -- and figuring out what matters the most. Sugar the Bruise, out from Fat Possum Records on June 16, doesn‚Äôt shy away from these truths. It dives into the heart of them.
In August 2021, nearly 2 years before Sugar the Bruise’s creation, Duffy taught a month-long songwriting class through School of Sound. They created a container for both new and experienced songwriters, designing prompts to help participants play with new approaches and forms. With additional production, engineering and arranging from Jeremy Harris, Duffy created something which, in their words, “Turned out nothing like I’d imagined it would.”
The result of this collective experiment, born equally from play and intention, is a radical gift for listeners: proof that our most vital processes, creation and destruction, are exquisitely entangled. In Sugar the Bruise, grief folds in on itself and becomes laughter; language fades away into sonic expanses of the inexpressible; melodies melt into cacophonies; love songs surrender to loss; historic violence is supplanted by the disks of sunlight.
Duffy, of course, is no stranger to the magic of collective music-making. They have collaborated with heavy-hitters as wide-ranging as Angel Olsen, Emile Mosseri, Perfume Genius, SASAMI, Sylvan Esso, and Weyes Blood. They have inflected each of these collaborations with what The New Yorker has called their “masterly sense of melody” and Pitchfork has described as their “virtuosic talent,” to name but some of the hyperbolic praise they’ve garnered over the course of their career (see other examples in Rolling Stone and The Fader, to name just a few more).
Duffy’s devout fans will recognize their signature intimacy, artistry, and technical expertise in Sugar the Bruise. But they will also encounter an artist questioning what it means to be in control. Do we write songs or do songs write us? The same could be asked of poems, of books, of whole lives. All artists realize sooner or later that choice is elusive, will is illusory. We grasp for certainty, we write towards resolution, only to learn again and again that as soon as we think we’ve arrived, these destinations prove themselves to be mirages. This lesson holds for all people, too. And, yet, we laugh along the way, we fall in love, we make meaning, and we play. She has been putting her time in on the road and in the studio over the past two years with pacific northwest band Mega Bog, and the Kevin Morby Band, making an impression on everyone she comes across with her natural charisma and uncharted talent as a multi-instrumentalist. But let Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void) be her open invitation to the world to step inside and take a much deeper look into who Duffy actually is. Tracked in an Upstate New York living room, then finished in her current home in Los Angeles - it is appropriate that this album was recorded by Meg herself - for Meg, who has an acute ear for detail, has touched every corner, has seen every vision 'til its end. Because of this, Wildly Idle feels incredibly intimate, like a secret between her and the listener. It hits soft, like warm water, and before you know it it is all around you - a bath, and Meg's whisper has made its way inside you. Like many bedroom-debuts before it (Microphones, Jessica Pratt, Little Wings, Grouper) let this be the first of many to come, for Meg has music in her touch - and this is only the beginning. But let us not look to the future now, but instead stand alongside her, our trust in her will, both humble before the void, with her first chorus as the mission statement; 'hold you like a flower, hold you like an hour glass'."- Kevin Morby

Release Date: February 10, 2017
Record Label: Woodsist Records
Format + Color: Vinyl

Tracklist:

Format + Color: CD

Tracklist:
1. From the gasoline that's used to fuel touring vehicles, to the massive amount of plastic waste at the end of every show, to the carbon emissions released into the air by all the travel, it's often not the most environmentally conscious career. I wanted to contribute, even if in a small way, to the efforts at work by the people at the Amazon Conservation Association for being dedicated to preserving such a vast and heartbreakingly crucial part of our ecosystem that has been threatened by wildfires, deforestation, and the effects of climate change. I believe that writing and performing music can be a healing force, used for good, and not always for capitalizing on emotions and commodifying a personality or lifestyle. People need to be able to relate to each other, in times of joy, and especially in times of sorrow or struggle. The Wildfire Compilation, in partnership with Bandcamp and Saddle Creek, will be donating all of it's funds raised to the ACA in hopes to lend a helping hand to those on the front lines of fighting climate change in places that may seem inaccessible to those of us unable to travel at length. I chose 5 artists, Tara Jane O'Neil, Lomelda, John Andrews, Angel Olsen, and Kacey Johansing to interpret and cover my song "wildfire" that I wrote during the California Wildfires in 2017. Produced by Sasami Ashworth (SASAMI) and engineered by Kyle Thomas (King Tuff), the record was not intended as a reaction to the pandemic, but it was very much the result of taking a difficult, if much-needed, moment of pause. Emboldened by going into therapy and coaxed by Ashworth to push the songs into unexpected new shapes, the resulting music is more acutely personal and stylistically adventurous than anything you’ve heard from Hand Habits before. The push/pull of styles, paired with songs that move deftly between the present and past, give the record a wildly diverse, hall of mirrors quality that befits its name.
